Cairns Courthouse

Project: Cairns Courthouse Queensland

Constructed in 1997 The Magistrates Courthouse situated in Cairns in far north Queensland has withstood the rigors of the wet monsoonal seasons of the Queensland tropics for 13 years.

The existing membranes that protected the building for many years commenced failing with the deterioration continued to accelerate and finally reached the point of major waterproofing intrusion into Magistrates Chambers, Courtrooms and various passage ways and plantrooms.

The membrane surrounding the cooling towers that formed the in a serious state of deterioration as was the old air-conditioning plant and equipment that had kept the building cool in the hot tropical heat.

The Attorney Generals Department of Queensland embarked on replacing the dilapidated Air-Conditioning plant and equipment with the contract being let to Cairns based Thomas & Coffey Builders.

The difficulties of working within an operating fully functioning Magistrates Courthouse quickly became obvious with,  no noise during Court hours, no toxic or fumic smells, fast application and curing of the intended membrane a must.

The ability to provide a full seal over the existing membrane without exposing the Courthouse to flooding from rain storms the pre-requisite of the membrane selection.
